4/2/2024 0 Comments Orphan trainThe novel is quick to read and several of the images from this rarely explored episode of American history will stick with me. However, the present day characters and their circumstances are much more realistic and the threads from the past to the present and back are wonderfully loosely drawn, clearly there, but surprisingly not forced. The central character seems to live through an amalgamation of events that likely occurred to many different children and thus her childhood seems artificial. I recommend Orphan Train to readers who enjoy historical fiction, especially a novel that explores an under-documented topic. Although at times I felt as if I were reading a novel assigned for a middle school English class, I quickly became attached to the two principle characters and was fascinated to learn about the orphan trains.
